About Dog Day

If you aren't already familiar with Dog Day at Skyline Farm, you are in for a treat. If you've had the pleasure of attending in the past, you're in for a lot more fun! This year's event will celebrate the connection between kids and dogs through activities, storytelling, interactive games and education. We will take the opportunity to help promote a SAFE, healthy and fun bond between kids and dogs. Parents, parents-to-be, dog owners-to-be and all combinations of the above stand to benefit from what Dog Day 4 offers!

 

Dog Day 4 isn't only for kids, though. There will be the usual agility for experienced and new dogs alike - brought to you by Tree Frog Farm Dog Training and Agility; games for everyone, including dog races and "dunkin for dogs" and more; professional dog trainers available to discuss dog behavior and training; exciting head-to-head training competitions between professional dog trainers and several Q&A sessions where some of those mysterious canine behaviors might be better understood. And more!

 

It will be a day packed with fun, entertainment and education, all taking place at Skyline Farm's gorgeous and spacious setting.

 

Lunch

Lunch will be available and is brought to us by Louis Pickens of Black Betty's Bistro. Louis is a talented chef and is creating a variety of delicious, nutritious sandwiches for us. He is donating his time and profits to Skyline Farm, so whatever profits are made will help Skyline continue to offer events like this and remain a vital community resource.

 

Three Weimaraners on a Sunny Day in Portland, Maine

Last weekend the sun came out for a few brief hours here in Portland, Maine.  Look who we found out and about in the Old Port... 

Three Weimaraners called Wellington, Wolfgang and their female companion Winslow!

These three Weimaraners are not only beautiful, but so well behaved!  Look at how well they posed for me!! 

Perhaps they knew that if they were good they would get a treat from Portland's best ice cream shop Beal's Ice Cream. 

Here they are enjoying their own cups of ice cream right on cobble stoned Wharf Street.  Almost feels like summer doesn't it guys???

No trip would be to Portland would be complete without a little sea food and so this crew also checked in to the dog friendly outside deck at Portland Lobster Company. We love this spot because you can enjoy Lobster and Steamers with your dogs right by your side. 

Do you think they are watching the ships come in or the seagulls fly around?  Either way they definitely found a great way to spend our first sunny Saturday of the season!

Woofstock in Damariscotta, Maine

This Saturday September11, 2010 is Woofstock 2010 in Damariscotta, Maine. The location this year is at Round Top Farm at the Damariscotta River Association.

Woofstock 2010 is an event in which all proceeds are donated to the shelters/rescues in attendance, and Rotary charities. New this year, Maine Search and Rescue joins the festivities to become another beneficiary. Woofstock is a completely non-profit event.

Woofstock features pet-related vendors from all over the region, seminars and demonstrations from area pet professionals, pet services and games, the Family Fun Dog Show, free samples, food, raffles and silent auction…and the best part, animal shelters and rescue from all over the state.

*Pet Services: Rescues/shelters each have a service or game at their table to help generate money for their individual rescue (for example, microchipping, nail clipping, etc.). They get to keep whatever funds they generate from their table, plus each rescue gets a cut from the Woofstock total).

Last year there were over 1500 people in attendance and raised over $7000.

They have raised over $30,000 in the past 6 years from this event.

Here in New England it seems the car of choice for many people is the Subaru. It has all wheel drive and it is reliable and with the recent redesign of their Outback model it seems that its popularity will most likely continue. Dogs.com reviewed the new 2010 Outback and gave it 5 PAWS. In the cargo area in back the reviewer judged that two Labrador Retrievers could fit comfortably and if you had dogs the size of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels you could maybe get up to six. The 2010 model Outback is 2 inches wider, the wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer and store capacity has now been expanded 6 feet to 71.3 feet.

Are you looking for a dog friendly restaurant in Portland, Maine? Portland Lobster Company in Portland Maine's Old Port is open for the season. They are located on commercial street right on the water. Just a couple blocks away from our new showroom. They have a fabulous deck overlooking Portland harbor and dogs are allowed on their deck. We are frequent visitors to Portland Lobster Company during the summer.

The staff is friendly and the food is great as well (their lobster rolls actually have lots of lobster in them- not loads of mayonnaise). How to Find your Lost Dog?...Microchip, Radio and GPS

A topic of conversation among some of our customers lately has been: What is the best method of tracking your pet if it runs away or gets lost?

In the April 1, 2008 issue of Family Circle magazine there is an interesting article highlighting the different methods for tracking your pets if they get lost.

The first option and probably the best known method for tracking your pet is the Microchip. In fact many breeders and some rescue organizations microchip their dogs prior to you acquiring them. The Microchip is an affordable, permanent way to identify your pet. Your vet must insert the Microchip and it costs roughly $25.00-$40.00.

Another option is a Radio Transmitter Collar. 

Central Park Dogs

We just arrived home from New York City. It is good to be home, but I love New York! We were staying  near Central Park and we saw dogs everyday running and playing in Central Park. There was a Yellow Lab who I think was my favorite. He was playing frisbee and ball with his owner and he kept running through a huge pool of water and mud to get his toys. Watching this Lab frolicking in muddy water it was easy to forget that we were in city of millions of people. This dog looked like any happy Labrador Retriever playing right here on the coast of Maine.

New Yorkers love of their dogs and their use of Central Park got me thinking about available resources for dog lovers in New York City who want to enjoy Central Park with their dogs.
