Duncan Prepares to Kayak

We are just back from a vacation and thought these pictures of Duncan in his new Life Preserver would make the perfect blog entry.

Duncan is a rescued Westie Puppy who is lucky enough to find himself commuting between an island off the coast of maine and the mainland with his owner.

On this particular day we found Duncan waiting for the ferry to go over to the island for a little kayaking.  His owner had bought a life preserver for him to be safe.

It turns out that Duncan LOVES his life preserver!  It must feel cozy because he was perfectly happy to have it on. 

I was so happy to see Duncan's new Nautical Flags Collar too!!  Duncan got his stylish summer collar from Agatha & Louise and I have to say he looked GREAT!!!!

We are always excited to meet rescued dogs and their owners.  In this case we can't think of a luckier dog!!  What Westie wouldn't love a life spent in beautiful island gardens and in a salty sea!

We love when customers send us photos of their dogs.  We just got this picture yesterday of Obi from California.

Obi is a mix from The Humane Society.  I love any and all scrappy terrier mixes, but Obi is an especially cute one!

"Cuddles" is a Featured Pet at the Animal Refugue League of Greater Portland

Aptly-named "Cuddles" is our nominee for Snuggler of the Year, and should have no trouble
taking home the trophy. This dear old sweetie was sadly given up by her family when they could no longer care for her. Since arriving at the shelter, Cuddles has begun treatment for infected ears, a urinary tract infection, and Lyme disease. She wants everyone to know she’s feeling much better, and if invited will climb into any available lap to say a personal thank you. Overweight at 92 pounds, she is quite a lapful. A sensible diet will help her attain a healthy weight and will take some of the pressure off her slightly arthritic hips. Despite these physical challenges, Cuddles is 10 years young, with a spring in her step, a twinkle in her eye, and a smile on her face. 

The Refuge- A Fundraiser for the Animal Refugue League of Greater Portland

The Refuge- local art to benefit local animals  is a Cocktail Party & Art Auction and is the one event dedicated to raising money to provide quality medical care to the animals of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARL).  Every year, the ARL takes in more than 4,000 stray, abandoned or owner surrendered pets from 15 communities, many of whom require medical treatment.

The Refuge is scheduled for June 10, 2010 from 5:30 - 9 PM. The event will feature great music, fantastic food, amazing art and much more from local artists and businesses within our community. The Portland Company at 58 Fore Street in Portland, Maine is home to the event - an open loft space where guests can mingle, enjoy cocktails and hors d’ouevres while perusing the auction – bidding to collect unique works of art and other items that will support animals in need.

Art Donations are needed and so are volunteers and sponsors. You can buy tickets online or at the Animal Refuge League.

We will keep you updated as the date for the Refuge gets closer.

Animal Refugue League of Greater Portland Voluntarily Closes Dog Kennels

Below is a notice from the Animal Refuge Leage of Greater Portland concerning the closing of their dog kennels:

Please be aware that ARL has voluntarily closed its dog kennels until March 12th 2010 due to a canine virus. We have one confirmed case of the virus in a puppy that became sick in a foster care setting. As a precaution our kennels are in quarantine. At this time we are not accepting surrendered dogs, nor will we have dogs available for adoption.
Currently, all dogs in the shelter are healthy and not showing any signs of illness. We will re-open for dog adoptions and relinquishments on March 12, 2010. Please note that we are making arrangements for stray dogs. Please call if you have found or lost a dog and notify your animal control officer.

This virus is not contagious to other species of animals. The shelter is still open, and many cats, kittens, and various small animals are anxiously waiting for your loving home.

Astro is 7 years old, but nobody told him he should be slowing down. This busy and beautiful 76 pound husky mix is seeking an active home where he can be a jogging companion, go for lots of walks or even go hiking, learn tricks, and be part of the family. He’s never met a stranger, and would be a perfect dog to take to work. Astro finds himself at the shelter through no fault of his own, due to a change in family circumstances. His ideal home will have children older than 6. He’d enjoy having another active dog to play with. He has successfully lived with cats in the past, and is said to be indifferent to them. True to his husky heritage, Astro is an independent guy who should remain on leash at all times, and has been known to try to dig out of his fenced yard. This can’t be considered a vice, because it is breed appropriate -- people who know and love huskies will understand and appreciate this trait. Astro is a loving, affectionate boy who has great enthusiasm for life and will make a terrific addition to any family. All he asks is love and affection in return.

Energetic Emily, a beagle/possibly boxer mix, is a distinctive-looking, people-loving, eager, friendly girl looking for an active new family. Surrendered to us when the family she’d lived with since puppyhood split up, Emily has charmed our staff and R&R volunteers. In a new family where she is exercised adequately, taught the finer points of housebreaking, and provided with the companionship she adores, Emily will shine with happiness. Housebreaking is a skill like any other, and with supervision, praise, and time Emily will soon be a reliably tidy member of the family. We have information for new adopters about how to housebreak a dog kindly and humanely. Emily has successfully lived with cats, and would most likely enjoy a canine playmate as well.

Lyla - 4 year old female -Whatever Lyla wants, Lyla gets. Well, within the boundaries of her Meet Your Match® orange Executive assessment. Executives tend to take on the leadership roles in their lives, and Lyla is a fine example of an Executive. She is independent, loving, intense, strong-willed, affectionate, and busy, busy, busy. Lyla was surrendered because she and the other pets in the home did not see eye to eye, or paw to paw for that matter. Perhaps she was not recognized for her superior management skills. At any rate, here she is. In her former home, Lyla had access to the outdoors, and a safe place to exercise might be a great idea for this lovely lady. During her assessment here, she came to the front of her cage to greet her tester.
