I was walking Gilkey last night and I realized that cold weather has really hit Maine. With the wind chill effect it was well below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I looked down at Gilkey and I could tell that she was not a "big fan" of this cold weather even with her new Houndstooth Coat on. I was thankful (and I am sure she was too) that in a few minutes she would soon be back in a warm house and she'd be able to curl back up in her Bumper Bed and call it "a night".
Gilkey is now 10 years old but I remember her first winter as a puppy...she was this little ball of fur who would just quiver and shake in the cold as we would take her outside trying to house train her (she was desperately looking for that one blade of grass- sometimes snow just isn't the right "spot"). Many people get their first puppy during the holidays so the cold winter months is when much of the house training takes place which can involve many long walks in the cold. Puppies are not very tolerant to cold so for some people paper training might be an option or very short walks. And you may want to consider a Dog Coat to help keep your dog or puppy warm during these chilly months.
The ASPCA has some great cold weather tips for dog owners to help properly take care of their pets in the cold.
Bundle up and keep your woofers warm!!
